It was proved by \textit{V. N. Dixit, R. Kuman} and \textit{N. Ajmal} [Fuzzy Sets Syst. 27, 359-371 (1990; Zbl 0728.20061)] that a fuzzy group can usually be realized as a union of two proper fuzzy subgroups (contradictory to the crisp case). This paper gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the union of an arbitrary family of fuzzy subgroups of a group to be a fuzzy group. This condition is preserved under images and inverse images of group homomorphisms.
