This work is an interesting new development in the field of algebraic quantum central limit theorems. It grew out of a paper by the author and \textit{K. Podgórski} [J. Math. Phys. 33, No. 8, 2768-2778 (1992; Zbl 0761.60078)] which it partly generalizes. The method of the paper is purely combinatorial and there is no positivity structure involved. The limiting procedure is that of the de-Moivre-Laplace central limit theorem; there is a certain class of admissible initial `distributions' and for each member of this class the normalized \(N\)th convolution power converges to a limit distribution. In the present paper the convolution comes from a comultiplication with the pattern known from the deformed universal enveloping algebra \(\text{su}_ q(2)\) of the Lie algebra of \(\text{SU}(2)\). This convolution has also been used by the reviewer [Commun. Math. Phys. 140, No. 3, 589-615 (1991; Zbl 0734.60048)] but the class of admissible distributions considered in the present paper is wider. More precisely, there is a new scalar parameter `\(a\)' coming in (the value of the distribution on the generator \(t^{-1}\)). The parameter \(a\neq 1\) forces a \((1/{\sqrt{[N]_{a^ 2}}})\)-normalization where \([N]_{a^ 2} = (a^{2N}-a^{-2N})/(a^ 2-a^{-2})\) which shows that the case \(a=1\) is a kind of a limiting case of the more general investigations of Lenczewski. We know from the earlier work of the author with Podgórski that in the case when the initial distribution is the one of the two-dimensional spin representation of \(\text{su}_ q(2)\), the limit distribution \(a = q\) is given by the Biedenharn-Macfarlane \(q\)-oscillator. In the case \(a = 1\), the limit distribution is the one of the Azéma noise. This shows that the distributions arising from the Lenczewski-limit procedure are of mathematical interest. This connection between the B-M oscillator and the Azéma noise (and martingales) was unknown.
