Let \(S_ n(f)\) be the \(n\)-th partial sum of the generalized Jacobi series of \(f\), \(u\) and \(w\) be generalized Jacobi weight functions. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the validity the following inequality \[ \| S_ n(f) w\|_ p\leq c\| fu\|_ p\quad (1<p< \infty) \] are proved. The results are used to prove weighted mean convergence of generalized Jacobi series. Remarks: 1. This problem independently was solved by \textit{J. J. Guadalupe}, \textit{M. PĂ©rez}, \textit{F. J. Ruiz}, and \textit{J. L. Varona} [Publ. Math., Barc. 35, No. 2, 449-459 (1991; Zbl 0737.42022)]. 2. For general weight functions \(u\) and \(w\) this problem was investigated by the reviewer [Usp. Mat. Nauk 43, No. 5(263), 207-208 (1988; Zbl 0716.42025) (if \(u\equiv w)\); and ``The representation of the bilinear kernels for general orthogonal polynomials'', Preprint (1991) (if \(u\not\equiv w)\)].
