Milling by numerical control usually proceeds in two steps: first milling and then grinding. The numerical control of milling involves mainly mechanical constraints of the machine and the avoidance of incidentally cutting off material at places other than the computed point of contact. Milling will leave the part with a rough surface that has to be smoothened. The authors are concerned with the second operation and derive a series of approximations for the computation of the dimensions orthogonal sections of ridges left by the operation of parallel cutter heads. In addition, they consider a number of implementation questions.
