The authors present a method for the numerical determination of the conformal mapping \(f\) from the interior of an ellipse to a simply connected region \(\Omega\). The mapping is approximated by a truncated Chebyshev series. The conformal map \(f\) must satisfy the two conditions: \(f\) is analytic and \(f\) maps the ellipse to the boundary of \(\Omega\). These conditions properly discretized give a set of nonlinear equations which determine the polynomial approximation. These equations are solved by Newton's method. The linear equations for the Newton update can be transplanted by the Joukowki map from the ellipse to the circle. This makes it possible to solve the linear equations very efficiently by a conjugate gradient method in combination with FFT. The method generalizes Fornberg's method from the disc as canonical domain to an ellipse. By a suitable choice of the aspect ratio of the ellipse one can circumvent the numerical problems which are caused by the crowding in the mapping from the disc to slender regions.
