Given a nonsingular matrix \(H\in \mathbb{C}^{n\times n}\), the class \(\Gamma_ H\) of matrices having the pseudocommutativity property is defined by \(\Gamma_ H = \{A\in\mathbb{C}^{n\times n}\mid \overline{A}H = HA\}\); if \(H\) is a Hermitian matrix, the class of \(H\)-selfadjoint matrices is defined by \(\Delta_ H=\{A\in\mathbb{C}^{n\times n}\mid A^*H=HA\}\). If \(H = \left[\begin{matrix} 0\;1 \\1\;0\end{matrix}\right]\), then \(\Gamma_ H\) is the class of centrohermitian matrices and \(\Delta_ H\) is the class of perhermitian matrices [\textit{cf. R. D. Hill, R. G. Bates, St. R. Waters}, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 11, No. 1, 128-133 (1990; Zbl 0709.15021), and No. 2, 173-179 (1990; Zbl 0709.15022)]. In this article necessary and sufficient conditions on the characteristic matrices are given such that some properties of centrohermitian or perhermitian matrices would hold for \(\Gamma_ H\) and \(\Delta_ H\) respectively. For example, it is proved that \(A \in \Gamma_ H\) implies \(A^*\in\Gamma_ H\) if and only if \(H\) is symmetric, skew-symmetric or unitary congruent to a direct sum of matrices of the form \(L = \left[\begin{matrix} 0\;\alpha \\ \beta\;0\end{matrix}\right]\), \(\alpha > 0\), \(\beta \in \mathbb{C}\), or \(H\) is unitary congruent to a direct sum of the above described matrices with distinct pseudospectra. Similar implications hold for \(\Delta_ H\) on condition that \(H^ 2 = \alpha I_ n\) for some positive \(\alpha\).
