The author studies the problem of smoothing of given data by periodic spline functions. By using the discrete Fourier transform he obtains explicit expressions for the smoothing splines of an arbitrary degree. The error of approximation and the asymptotic properties of the splines and their derivatives are investigated. As an application of the obtained explicit formulas, the author considers data processing by using spline functions and the fast Fourier transform.
