The author introduces an analogue of the classical Yang-Baxter equation for vertex operator algebras. To do this, he follows the way of Semenov- Tian-Shansky who considered a classical \(R\)-matrix for a Lie algebra \({\mathfrak L}\) as a linear map \(R\in\text{End}({\mathfrak L})\) such that \([x,y]_ R=[R(x),y]+[x,R(y)]\) becomes a new Lie bracket on \({\mathfrak L}\). A sufficient condition for \(R\) to be an \(R\)-matrix is the modified Yang- Baxter equation: \([R(x),R(y)]-R([x,y]_ R)=-[x,y]\) for \(x,y\in {\mathfrak L}\). Using this approach the author defines an \(R\)-matrix for the vertex operator algebra \(V\) to be an endomorphism \(R\) of \(V\) satisfying certain conditions. Then similarly to the Lie algebra case there is a sufficient condition for \(R\) to be an \(R\)-matrix, which is naturally called the modified Yang-Baxter equation for a vertex operator algebra. An example of this construction is given.
