The fusions of primary fields in Wess-Zumino conformal field theories are translated explicitly in terms of intertwining operators of highest weight modules for affine Lie algebra \(\widehat {\mathfrak {sl}_ 2}\) (vertex operators). A system of compatible equations on matrix coefficients (``descent equations'') of vertex operators is suggested. These equations define the vertex operators uniquely. A method of solution of descent equations is proposed. The solutions produce formulas for singular vectors in Verma modules of \(\widehat {\mathfrak {sl}_ 2}\) which generalize and partially explain the results by Benoit and St. Aubin; Bauer, Di Francesco, Itzykson and Zuber. A relation to a general implicit expression for singular vectors by Feigin-Malikov-Fuks is discussed.
