The general completion problem can be formulated in the following way. On some set (unit circle, unit disc, upper half-plane and so on) an ``incomplete'' matrix-function is given. This is a rectangular table partitioned into rectangular blocks by some horizontal and vertical lines. Part of these blocks are filled in: they are given matrix- functions belonging to certain classes. Another part of these blocks are not filled in. Thus, the given matrix-function is only ``partially filled in'', or ``incomplete''. The objective is to ``fill in'' the nongiven blocks (or ``to complete'' the given incomplete matrix) so as to obtain a rectangular matrix-function which belongs to a prescribed class of matrix-functions (e.g., the class of holomorphic contractive or \(J\)- contractive matrix-functions, the class of matrix-functions with the positive real part and so on). Each such filled in matrix-function from a given class is said to be a solution of the completion problem. The situation depends essentially on the configuration the ``filled in'' part and on the class of matrix function to which a solution is to belong. In the reviewed paper the case is considered, if only 12-entry is given, and the completion problem is considered in the class of \(j_{pq}\)-inner functions where \(j_{pq}:=\text{diag}(I_ p,-I_ q)\). There are also considered completion problems (for given 12-entry) for some distinguished subclasses of \(j_{pq}\)-inner functions. In particular, the paper deals with \(j_{pq}\)-inner function of Smirnov type, inverse Smirnov type, and \(A\)-singular (or Arov-singular) functions. In the case of given column (both the 12 and 22 entries are given) the completion problem for \(j_{pq}\)-inner functions was considered in [the authors, Anal. Anwend. 11, No. 4, 489-508 (1992; reviewed below)]. Case of a completion problem in which the 11, 12 and 22 are given and the solution is to belong to the class of inner functions was cosidered in [D. Z. Arov, Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 201, 559-562 (1971; Zbl 0246.47035) and in \textit{R. G. Douglas} and \textit{J. W. Helton}, Acta Sci. Math. 34, 61-67 (1973; Zbl 0267.30032)]. This is the so-called problem of Darlingtons synthesis. The important case of a completion problem, in which the 11, 12 and 22 entries are given and the solution is to belong to the class of holomorphic matrix-functions with the nonnegative real part was considered in [the reviewer, Theor. Funkts., Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 43, 54-70 (1985; Zbl 0583.47033); the reviewer [ibid. 56, 105-122 (1991; Zbl 0758.30033) and \textit{B. Fritzsche} and \textit{B. Kirstein}, Math. Nachr. 138, 217-237 (1988; Zbl 0662.15010)].
