    The authors consider the generalized Liénard system (1) \(\dot x= \varphi(y)\), \(\dot y= -f(x) \varphi(y)+ g(x)\). Using the notation \(F(x)= \int^ x_ 0 f(s)ds\), \(G(x)= \int^ x_ 0 g(s)ds\) they obtain the following: Theorem: Assume (i) \(xF(x)\geq 0\), \(xg(x)> 0\), for all \(x\neq 0\); (ii) \(\phi(y)\) is strictly monotone increasing and \(y\phi(y)> 0\) for all \(y\neq 0\), as well as \(\phi(\pm\infty)= \pm\infty\). Then the zero solution of system (3) has global asymptotic stability if and only if (a) \(\varlimsup_{| x|\to +\infty} (| F(x)|+ G(x))= +\infty\), and (b) \(F(x)\not\equiv 0\) on any open interval containing the zero point. The proof is based on the Lyapunov function \(V(u,v)= G(u)+ \int^ v_ 0 \varphi(s) ds\), where \(u= x\), \(v= y+ F(x)\).
