The objective is the localization analysis of orthotropic Hill type elasto-plasticity. Thereby, the underlying motivation is the necessity to model the anisotropic behaviour of metal specimens which is due to the manufacturing procedure in terms of an orthotropic yield condition. To this end, the classical von Mises condition is replaced by a yield criterion which invokes a second order anisotropy tensor acting on the deviatoric stresses. A reparametrization of this model reveals its relation to the classical criterion originally proposed by Hill. The plastic evolution laws follow from the hypothesis of general associativity. Special emphasis is directed towards the numerical implementation of the constitutive model within the framework of finite element analysis of inelastic boundary value problems. The influence of the anisotropy effects on the localization analysis is contrasted to the outcome of an analysis with the standard isotropic von Mises model. To this end, the intriguing influence of certain types of orthotropy is pointed analytically and numerically. Finally, the numerical implications of the orthotropic elastoplastic approach are demonstrated for examples of localization within a plane stress uniaxial tension problem and a plane strain compression problem.
