The first author, in two papers in Chinese, has proposed the remainder effect analysis method (REAM) by means of the modified partial differential equations of finite difference schemes (FDS). This method is based also on the synthetical study of the rational dispersion and dissipation relations of FDS. In the present paper the Fourier analysis approach of the dispersion relation and the group velocity effect of FDS are critically discussed. A lot of formulas of REAM are deduced and discussed in details. Applications of REAM to the analysis of some important schemes are presented together with some numerical examples.
