The paper examines the stability of axial deformation of rotating rods, which exhibit an instability when the angular speed reaches a certain critical value. Axial deformation is analyzed using two strain energy functions describing nonlinear elastic behaviour. If the nonlinearity is stiffening, no instability exists, whereas the critical angular speed drops as the degree of softening increases.
