A geometrical study of the 1:2 resonance in Hamiltonian systems with \(O(2)\) symmetry is presented. Several applications that can be found in the field of water waves are reviewed: two-dimensional capillary-gravity surface waves, gravity waves in a circular basin, two-dimensional gravity waves on a stably stratified two-layer fluid. Use is made of the reduced Hamiltonian to formally derive a system of equations describing the dynamics of resonant waves. The resulting system does not depend on the physical application, except for the value of some coefficients. This system is then studied mathematically through the use of geometrical methods (projection on the orbit space and polar blowing-up of the vector field).
