Let \({\mathfrak g}\) be an affine Lie algebra, \({\mathfrak h}\) its Cartan subalgebra and \(\{h_i\}_{i \in I}\) the set of simple coroots. Let \(W\) be the Weyl group, `\(l\)' and `\(\geq\)' its length function and Bruhat order respectively. For \(y,w \in W\) let \(P_{y,w} (q)\) denote the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial. For \(\lambda \in {\mathfrak h}^*\), let \(M (\lambda)\) (resp. \(L(\lambda))\) be the Verma (resp. irreducible) module with highest weight \(\lambda\) and let \(ch\) denote the character. Choose \(\rho \in {\mathfrak h}^*\) such that \(\rho (h_i) = 1\) for all \(i \in I\). The main result of this paper is the following theorem which was conjectured by \textit{G. Lusztig} in [J. Algebra 131, 466-475 (1990; Zbl 0698.16007)]. Theorem: For any \(\lambda \in {\mathfrak h}^*\) such that \((\lambda + \rho) (h_i) \in \mathbb{Z}_{< 0}\) for all \(i \in I\), and for any \(w \in W\) we have \[ ch L \bigl( w(\lambda + \rho) - \rho \bigr) = \sum_{y \leq w} (- 1)^{l(w) - l(y)} P_{y,w} (1)ch M \bigl( y(\lambda + \rho) - \rho \bigr). \]
