An extended form of a conjecture of E. C. Dade is verified for tame blocks, that is 2-blocks whose defect groups are dihedral, generalized quaternion or quasidihedral. The structure of such blocks were studied by R. Brauer, K. Erdmann and the reviewer and these results are used in the paper. The situation treated in the paper is that where \(B\) is a tame \(E\)-invariant block of a normal subgroup \(G\) of a finite group \(E\) and \(O_2(G)=1\). For each subgroup \(F\) between \(G\) and \(E\) it is shown that \(\sum(-1)^{|C|}k(N_G(C),B,d,F)=0\), where the sum is on the representatives \(C\) of the \(G\)-conjugacy classes of elementary \(p\)-chains in \(G\). Here \(|C|\) is the length of the chain \(C\) and \(k(N_G(C),B,d,F)\) counts the number of irreducible characters of defect \(d\) of \(N_G (C)\) which lie in a block \(b\) with \(b^G=B\), and whose inertia group \(I\) in \(N_E(C)\) satisfies \(IG=F\).
