A local Noether lattice \(L\) with maximal element \(M\) is called a local approximately Gorenstein lattice if, for every positive integer \(n\), there exists a meet irreducible \(M\)-primary element \(Q\in L\) such that \(Q\leq M^n\). Further, a Noether lattice is called an approximately Gorenstein lattice if its localization at any maximal element is a local approximately Gorenstein lattice. The authors give various characterizations for a local Noether lattice to be local approximately Gorenstein and for a Noether lattice to be Gorenstein. Further, a local Noether ring \(R\) with maximal ideal \(m\) is approximately Gorenstein if for every positive integer \(n\) there is an ideal \(q\) of \(R\) such that \(q\subseteq m^n\) and \(R/q\) is Gorenstein, i.e. has finite injective dimension; a Noether ring \(R\) is approximately Gorenstein if the local ring \(R_M\) is local approximately Gorenstein for every maximal ideal \(M\) of \(R\). The following is proved: A Noether ring is approximately Gorenstein iff the lattice of ideals of \(R\) is approximately Gorenstein. Finally, an example is given showing that an approximately Gorenstein lattice need not be the lattice of ideals of an approximately Gorenstein ring.
