Let \(k\) be a field. A \(k\)-algebra \(A\) is called quasitilted if (1) \(\text{gldim }A\leq 2\), and (2) \(\text{pd}_AM\leq 1\) or \(\text{id}_AM\leq 1\), for each indecomposable \(A\)-module \(M\), where \(\text{pd}_AM\) is the projective dimension of \(M\), \(\text{id}_AM\) is the injective dimension of \(M\). The concept was introduced by \textit{D. Happel}, \textit{I. Reiten} and \textit{S. Smalø} in 1996 [see Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 575 (1996; Zbl 0849.16011)]. In this paper, the authors give five characterizations of the condition (2) above. The authors obtain the concept of shod (for small homological dimension) algebras, i.e., the algebras satisfy condition (2) above. In addition, the authors exhibit some examples to illustrate several situations which can occur for shod algebras.
