    This paper presents a good application of feedback control theory to reducing the possibility of chaos in a dynamic model of the cantilever-sample interaction in atomic force microscopes. Based on a nonlinear model with one degree of freedom, in the first part of the work the authors analyze the forced dynamics using the Melnikov method. In the state-space the chaos depends on the extent of damping and forcing. Then, using some surface diagrams in the space of physical parameters, they select the controller parameters to suppress the possibility of chaos.
