This paper gives explicit surgery formulae to compute in an easy way Ohtsuki's rational invariants \(\lambda_n\) of integral homology 3-spheres [\textit{T. Ohtsuki}, Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 117, No. 1, 83-112 (1995; Zbl 0843.57019)] obtained from Reshetikhin-Turaev \(SU(2)\) quantum invariants [\textit{N. Reshetikhin} and \textit{V. G. Turaev}, Invent. Math. 103, No. 3, 547-597 (1991; Zbl 0725.57007)]. In particular, \(\lambda_2\) is shown to be always an integer which is a multiple of 3. This fact, together with the Murakami result that \(\lambda_1\) is 6 times the Casson invariant [\textit{H. Murakami}, Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 115, No. 2, 253-281 (1994, Zbl 0832.57005)], leads the authors to conjecture that \(n!\lambda_n\in 6\mathbb{Z}\), for all \(n\). Other consequences include some general criteria for distinguishing homology 3-spheres obtained from surgery on knots by using Jones polynomials.
