A topological group \(G\) is called minimal if every continuous homomorphism \(f\colon G\to H\) is open. If all continuous homomorphisms \(g\colon G\to K\) are also open, the group \(G\) is called totally minimal. The author presents an updated survey of results concerning countably compact topological groups which are either minimal or totally minimal. The survey is focused on three main topics: countably compact totally minimal groups, structure of countably compact minimal groups, and products of countably compact minimal groups. The reader will also find related information about pseudocompact and sequentially complete groups, as well as a number of selected open problems supplied with comments. The article contains an extensive list of bibliography consisting of 119 items.
