Following \textit{E. Lerman} [Math. Res. Lett. 2, No.~3, 247-258 (1995; Zbl 0835.53034)] the authors study the symplectic cuts \(C_+,C_-\) of the symplectic manifold \(M\) endowed with a Hamiltonian \(S^1\)-action with momentum map \(f:M\to R\). \(C_+,C_-\) are the quotient spaces of \(M_+=f^{-1} (R_{\geq 0})\), \(M_-= f^{-1}(R_{\leq 0})\) according to the equivalence relation on \(M\) distinguishing points from \(M_+-M_0\), \(M_--M_0\) and identifying those from the orbits of an \(S^1\)-action. The authors compute the rational cohomology ring \(H^* (C_+,Q)\) and \(H^*(C_0,Q)\) in terms of those of \(M\) and \(C_-\). They prove that the cohomology ring \(H^*(C_+,Q)\) is isomorphic as a graded ring to \(\text{ker} (p^*-i^*)\) divided by some canonical ideal in \(\text{ker} (p^*-i^*)\). Here \(p: M_\pm \to C_\pm\) are the various projections, \(i\) is any inclusion between spaces, and \(p^*- i^*:H^*(C_-) \oplus H^*(M)\to H^*(M_-)\) is the group homomorphism.
