The author investigates the singular variational problem \[ \int_\Omega u\sqrt{1+|\nabla u|^2}+{1\over 2} \int_\Omega|u^2- \varepsilon^2|d{\mathcal H}^{n- 1}\to\min\tag{1} \] among functions \(u\) from the space \(\text{BV}^+_2(\Omega)= \{u\in L^2(\Omega): u\geq 0, u^2\in \text{BV}(\Omega)\}\) presenting conditions on the boundary values \(\varphi\) which imply positivity of any solution \(u\) of problem (1). The main result reads as follows: Let \(\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^n\) denote a Lipschitz domain and let \(\varphi\in L^\infty(\partial\Omega)\) fulfill the isoperimetric condition \[ \inf_{\partial\Omega} \varphi> 2n\cdot c(n)\Biggl(1+{1\over n}\Biggr)^{n+ 1}|\Omega|^{{1\over n}},\;c(n)= n^{-1}\cdot \omega_n^{-{1\over n}}.\tag{2} \] Then every solution \(u\in \text{BV}^+_2(\Omega)\) of (1) is positive and belongs to the class \(C^\omega(\Omega)\). Furthermore, if \(\Omega\) is mean convex and \(\varphi\) is continuous at \(x_0\in\partial\Omega\), then \(u\) is also continuous at \(x_0\) and \(\lim_{x\to x_0} u(x)= \varphi(x_0)\). Finally, in case \(\varphi\in C^{1,\alpha}(\partial\Omega)\) and \(\partial\Omega\in C^3\), we have \(u\in C^\omega(\Omega)\cap C^{0,1}(\overline\Omega)\).
