Recently I. Cherednik has introduced the notion of a double affine Hecke algebra, and has used it to prove several conjectures on Macdonald polynomials [see \textit{I. Cherednik}, Ann. Math., II. Ser. 141, No. 1, 191-216 (1995; Zbl 0822.33008) and his later work]. His double affine Hecke algebra and the polynomials of type \(\widetilde{C}_n\) depend on three parameters. In the paper under review a double affine Hecke algebra for the \(\widetilde{C}_n\) case is defined which depends on six parameters. The associated orthogonal polynomials are precisely the six-parameter family of polynomials \(P_\lambda\) introduced by \textit{T. H. Koornwinder} [Contemp. Math. 138, 189-204 (1992; 797.33014)]. These polynomials are remarkable since they are generalizations of the Macdonald polynomials associated to a classical root system as well as to the Askey-Wilson polynomials. Koornwinder and I.Macdonald formulated several conjectures for these polynomials, which are analogous to those proved by Cherednik for Macdonald polynomials - the `constant term', `norm', `evaluation' and `duality' conjectures. It was shown by \textit{J. van Diejen} that the latter conjecture implies the other three [Invent. Math. 126, No. 2, 319-339 (1996; Zbl 0869.33012)]. Using the introduced double affine Hecke algebra the duality conjecture is proved in this paper.
