Following \textit{R. Goetschel jun.} and \textit{W. Voxman} [Fuzzy Sets Syst. 18, 31-43 (1986; Zbl 0626.26014)] the authors define a fuzzy number as a triple \((u_0, u_*, u^*)\) where the real number \(u_0\) is a location parameter and \(u_*,\;u^*\) are decreasing fuzziness index functions. The main idea of the paper is to define arithmetic operations on fuzzy numbers such that these operations are performed separately on locations and fuzziness functions. The authors propose that the fuzziness functions are joined by maximum. It follows that these arithmetic operations do not increase fuzziness, which is not the case with the arithmetic operations defined by Zadeh's extension principle. Unfortunately some material in the paper is carelessly formulated. For instance the fuzziness index functions should be decreasing instead of nondecreasing. This is also easily seen from examples given in the paper. A reader may also consult \textit{R. E. Giachetti} and \textit{R. E. Young}: ``A parametric representation of fuzzy numbers and their arithmetic operators'' [Fuzzy Sets Syst. 91, No. 2, 185-202 (1997; Zbl 0920.04008)].
