In recent years a lot of techniques have been developed to analyze time series of complex dynamical systems. Most of the previous approaches are based on the fact that the data can be approximated globally by a few dynamical modes, which of course is violated in the analysis of many natural systems. The authors present a new technique to characterize the spatiotemporal dynamics by typical spatial length scales. The main idea is based on the finding of an intermediate spatial scale between the noisy microscales and the large scales, where the interesting dynamics is suppressed by averaging effects.
