First, the Dirichiet space \(D(\mu)\) of all holomorphic functions \(f\) on the unit disk \(\mathbb{D}\) in \(\mathbb{C}\) such that \(f'\) is square integrable with respect to the Poisson integral of the finite and positive measure \(\mu\) on \(\partial\mathbb{D}\) is introduced. The authors look in particular at the case \(\mu= \delta_1\), the unit point mass at the point \(1\in \partial\mathbb{D}\). This space is of interest in view of composition operators \(C_\varphi\) associated with a non-constant holomorphic self-map \(\varphi\) of \(\mathbb{D}\) since \(\varphi\in D( \partial_1)\) is a necessary condition for \(C_\varphi\) to be bounded in \(D( \delta_1)\). Several criteria on boundedness and compactness of \(C_\varphi\) are proved. In particular, it is shown that \(C_\varphi\) is not compact if \(\varphi(1)=1\). On the other hand, those \(\varphi\) which give rise to a Hilbert-Schmidt operator are completely characterized by an integrability condition for \(\varphi\). The last section treats boundedness and compactness in \(D(\mu)\) for an arbitrary bounded and finite measure \(\mu\) by utilizing well-known results on Carleson measures.
