Let \(X\) be a normed linear space, and let \(A\subset X\). A mapping \(\Phi: X\to A\) is called a (multiplicative) \(\varepsilon\)-selection if for any \(x\in X\) the inequality \(\left\|\Phi\left(x\right)-x\right\|\leq \left(1+\varepsilon\right)\cdot\inf_{a\in A}\left\|x-a\right\|\) holds. Let us recall that a Chebyshev system \(\left\{u_m\left(t\right)\right\}_{m=0}^n\), \(t\in\left[a,b\right]\), of \(n\)-times continuously differentiable functions is called \(ET\)-system if any polynomial by this system has no more than \(n\) roots on \(\left[a,b\right]\) with regard to their multiplicity. If \(L\) is the linear span of an \(ET\)-system on \(\left[0,1\right]\) and \(\dim L=k\), \(k\in{\mathbb N}\), then \(L\) is called the \(ET_{k-1}\)-space. The author deals with the case when \(X=L_1\left[0,1\right]\) and \(A=R_{V,W}\) is the closure in \(L_1\left[0,1\right]\) of the following set: \[ \left\{r\left(\tau\right)={v\left(\tau\right)\over{w\left(\tau\right)}}: v\in V, w\in W, \min_{\tau\in\left[0,1\right]}w\left(\tau\right)>0\right\}, \] where \(V\) is a subspace of \(L_1\left[0,1\right]\) with \(1\leq\dim V<\infty\) and \(W\) is an \(ET_{n-1}\)-subspace with \(n\geq 3\). The main result of the article is that for such pair \(\left(V,W\right)\) there exists a number \(\varepsilon_0=\varepsilon_0\left(V,W\right)>0\) such that the inequality \(\varepsilon\geq\varepsilon_0\) holds for any continuous multiplicative \(\varepsilon\)-selection \(\Phi: L_1\left[0,1\right]\to R_{V,W}\). Thus, for small \(\varepsilon>0\) there does not exist a continuous multiplicative \(\varepsilon\)-selections into the sets of generalized fractions in the space \(L_1\left[0,1\right]\). In the conclusion the author notes that this result can be applied to the set of algebraic rational functions \(R_{m,n}\), \(n\geq 2\), and, furthermore, it is possible to prove its analog for \(n=1\).
