The [harmonic] Dirichlet-type space \(D(\mu)\) [\(\mathcal D(\mu)\)] for the measure \(\mu\) on the unit circle \(\partial\mathbb D\subset\mathbb R^2\) is the space of all holomorphic [harmonic] functions \(f\) on \(\partial \mathbb D\) such that the integral \[ D_\zeta(f) := \int_{\partial\mathbb D} \left| \frac{f(e^{it}\zeta) - f(\zeta) }{e^{it}-1}\right|^2\,\frac{dt}{2\pi} \] is \(\mu(d\zeta)\) integrable. Note that \(D(d\zeta/2\pi)\) corresponds to the classical Douglas integral. The norm on \(D(\mu)\) resp.\ \(\mathcal D(\mu)\) is given by \(\| f\|^2 = \int D_\zeta(f)\,\mu(d\zeta) + \| f\|^2_{L^2(\mu)}\). The main result of the present paper is about the characterization of pointwise multipliers of the spaces \(D(\mu)\) resp.\ \(\mathcal D(\mu)\) in terms of Carleson measures. A measure \(\nu\) on \(\mathbb D\) is a \(\mu\)-Carleson measure if \(\int P(| f|^2\cdot\mu)\,d\nu \leq C\| f\|^2 \) for all \(f\in D(\mu)\), for the Poisson kernel \(P(\rho)(z) := \int \frac{1-| z|^2}{| z-\zeta| ^2}\,\rho(d\zeta)\) and for some absolute constant \(C\). It is shown that \(\phi\) on \(\partial\mathbb D\) is a multiplier on \(\mathcal D(\mu)\) if, and only if, \(\phi\) is bounded and \(|\partial\phi/\partial z|^2\cdot dA\), \(|\partial\phi/\partial \bar z|^2\cdot dA-\) where \(dA\) is normalized Lebesgue measure on \(\mathbb D\) -- are \(\mu\)-Carleson measures. A corresponding result for \(D(\mu)\) was given in an earlier paper by the present author [J. Oper. Theor. 48, 3--13 (2002; Zbl 1019.47028)]. The main result of the paper under review concerns equivalent characterizations of \(\mu\)-Carleson measures. It reads: Let \(\mu\) be either absolutely continuous with a Muckenhoupt \(A_2\)-density or a finite sum of point masses and let \(\nu\) be a positive, finite Borel measure on \(\mathbb D\) and \(\sigma := (P\mu)\cdot\nu\). Then \(\nu\) is a \(\mu\)-Carleson measure if, and only if, \(\sigma(\bigcup_n S(I_n)) \leq C\gamma(\bigcup_n I_n)\) for some constant \(C\) and each finite sequence \((I_n)_n\) of disjoint arcs. Here, \(S(I_n)\) denotes the Carleson square and \(\gamma\) is the Dirichlet capacity corresponding to the norm on \(\mathcal D(\mu)\).
