The present investigation is motivated by the general problem of understanding the structure of complemented subspaces in VMO. For a bounded collection \(x_I\) of scalars, consider the space of null-sequences \(a_I\) for which the following norm is finite: \[ \| a_I\| =\Bigl\| \sum x_I a_I h_I\Bigr\| _{\text{VMO}} +\sup | a_I| \] (here the \(\chi_I\) are the Haar functions). It is shown that this space is embeddable complementedly in VMO and is isomorphic either to \(c_0\), or to \(VMO\), or to \((\sum \text{BMO}_n)_0\). Also, these spaces arise as the limit case (as \(p\to\infty\)) of the scale determined by the norms \[ \{a_I\}\mapsto \Bigl\| \sum a_I x_I^{1-2/p}| I| ^{-1/p} h_I\Bigr\| _{L_p}+ \Bigl(\sum | a_I| ^p\Bigr)^{1/p}, \quad p\geq 2. \] It is shown that, for each \(p\in[2, \infty)\), \(L^p\) and \(l^p\) represent the only possible isomorphic types for the latter scale.
