The author studies the essential spectrum of some matrix differential operators. He develops the results obtained in [\textit{H. Langer} and \textit{M. Möller}, Math. Nachr. 178, 233-248 (1996; Zbl 0851.35099); \textit{G. D. Rajkov}, Asymptotic Anal. 3, 1-35 (1990; Zbl 0962.76096)]; namely, he considers in the space \((L_2(\Omega,\rho))^3\) the matrix operator \[ L=\begin{pmatrix}-\rho^{-1}\nabla \rho a \;\text{div} + B & \;\;\;-i\rho^{-1} \nabla \rho c_1 \\ -ic_2 \;\text{div} & d \end{pmatrix}, \] \[ D(L)=\{f=(f_1,f_2,f_3)\in (W_2^1(\Omega))^3: \partial_1f_1+\partial_2f_2\in W_2^1(\Omega), \nu_1f_1+\nu_2f_2|_{\partial\Omega}=0\} \] (related to some magnetohydrodynamic model of a perfectly conducting nonviscous compressible hot plasma in an exterior straight-force-lines magnetic field), where \((\nu_1,\nu_2)\) is the outer normal and \(B=(B_{ij})_{i,j=1}^2\) is a matrix potential. The authors formulate the theorem, stating that under some smoothness conditions on \(a,c_1,c_2\) and \(\rho\) and positiveness of \(\rho\) and \(a\) on \(\overline{\Omega}\), the operator \(L\) is closable and the essential spectrum of the closure is the set \[ \bigcup\limits_{x\in\overline{\Omega}}\sigma_{\text{ess}}(\hat{B}(x))\cup\left(d-\frac{c_1c_2}{a}\right) (\overline{\Omega}) \] where \(\hat{B}(x)=PB(x), \;P\) \ being the orthogonal projection in \((L_2(\Omega,\rho))^2\) onto Ker\((\overline{A})\), where \(A=-\rho^{-1}\nabla \rho a \) div. The proofs are only sketched.
