Let \(G\) be a Vilenkin group generated by a sequence of integers \(p_ n\geq 2\) and set \(m_ n=p_ 1\cdots p_ n\), \(n=1,2,\dots\;\). It is well-known that if \(f\) is continuous on \(G\) and \(\lim\sup p_ n<\infty\) then the Vilenkin-Fourier series of \(f\) is uniformly \((C,1)\) summable on \(G\). Various authors have studied what happens when \(\lim\sup p_ n=\infty\), and the present paper continues this line of investigation. Here is a summary of the results obtained. If the modulus of continuity of a continuous \(f\) satisfies \(\omega_{n- 1}(f)= o(1/\log p_ n)\) as \(n\to \infty\), then \(\sigma_{m_ n} f\to f\) uniformly on \(G\). If \(\lim\sup p_ n=\infty\), then there is a continuous \(f\) with \(\omega_{n-1}(f)=o(1/\log p_ n)\) such that \(\sigma_{m_ n}f\) does not converge uniformly on \(G\). From these results, the author obtains a sufficient condition for uniform \((C,1)\) summability on arbitrary Vilenkin groups \(G\) and a necessary and sufficient condition for the class \(H^ \omega(G)\) under which \(\sigma_{m_ n}f\to f\) uniformly on \(G\) for all \(f\in H^ \omega(G)\). The author also identifies conditions sufficient to conclude that a given Vilenkin series is a Vilenkin-Fourier series. For Vilenkin groups of bounded type, these conditions include quasi-convexity of the coefficients. For Vilenkin groups of unbounded type, these conditions do not even include convexity. In fact, the author shows that if \(\lim\sup p_ n=\infty\) there is a convex null sequence \(\{a_ n\}\) such that the corresponding series is not the Vilenkin-Fourier series of any integrable function.
