This paper is concerned with descriptive set theoretic questions related to concepts of harmonic synthesis on the unit circle \({\mathbb{T}}\) and their relationship with the structure of uniqueness sets. It is shown that the set of synthesizable pseudomeasures is coanalytic but not Borel. The gap between the classes U and \(U_ 0\) (of closed uniqueness sets and closed extended uniqueness sets, resp.) is analyzed in terms of a new transfinite hierarchy of classes. It is shown that the properness of this hierarchy is equivalent to the statement that the set of synthesizable pseudofunctions (which is coanalytic) is not Borel and also to the assertion that the class \(U^*_ 1\) [introduced by \textit{A. S. Kechris} and \textit{A. Louveau} in Descriptive set theory and the structure of sets of uniqueness (Lond. Math. Soc. Lect. Note Ser. 128, 1987; Zbl 0642.42014)] is not coanalytic (it is already known to be not analytic). It is conjectured that all these equivalent statements are true.
