For multiple Fourier series the cubic partial sums need not converge in measure (in contrast to the one-dimensional case which is settled by the classical theorem of Kolmogorov). This was proved by the author [Mat. Zametki 44, No. 2, 196-201 (1988; Zbl 0661.42007)]. In this paper he considers a more general question: Is there necessarily a subsequence of the above partial sum which converges almost everywhere? The main theorem gives a negative answer to this question. If \(\varphi: [0, \infty)\to [0, \infty)\) is nondecreasing, then \(\varphi(L)(\mathbb{T}^ m)\) denotes the class of functions \(f\) on \(\mathbb{T}^ m\) such that \((2\pi)^{- m} \int_{\mathbb{T}^ m} \varphi(| f(x)|) dx< \infty\). For the Fourier series \(\sum_ k f_ k e^{ikx}\) of \(f\in L^ 1(\mathbb{T}^ m)\) the cubic partial sums are defined by \(S_ n(f)(x)= \sum_{| k|\leq n} f_ k e^{ikx}\), where \(| k|= |(k_ 1,\dots, k_ m)|= \max(| k_ 1|,\dots, | k_ m|)\). Theorem: Let \(m\geq 2\) and let \(\varphi\) be such that \(\varphi(u)/(u(\ln u)^{m- 1})\) is decreasing on \([2, \infty)\) and \(\int^ \infty_ 2 (\varphi(u)/ u^ 2(\ln u)^ m) du< \infty\). Then there is an \(f\in \varphi(L)(\mathbb{T}^ m)\) such that, for every increasing sequence \(\{n_ k\}\) of natural numbers and for almost every \(x\in \mathbb{T}^ m\), \(\limsup_{k\to \infty} | S_{n_ k}(f)(x)|= \infty\). The proof uses methods developed by \textit{S. V. Bochkarev} [Tr. Mat. Inst. Steklova 146 (1978; Zbl 0521.42023)].
