A \(C_ 0\)-semigroup \((T_ t)\) on a Hilbert space \(H\) is called \(e\) (exponentially) resp. strongly resp. weakly stable if \(\| T_ t\|\leq Me^{-\alpha t}\) resp. \(T_ t@>>{t\to\infty}>0\) in the strong resp. weak operator-topology. Starting with a characterization of \(e\)-stability [\textit{R. Datko}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 32, 610-616 (1979)] the author proves the existence of a shift-semigroup \((L_ t)\) on a related Hilbert space \(L^ 2(\mathbb{R}_ +,K)\) of square-integrable vector valued functions. It turns out (Theorem 2) that \((T_ t)\) is similar to a shift semigroup if the norm defined by \(\| x\|_ p^ 2:=\int \| T_ t x\|^ 2 dt\) on \(H\) is equivalent to the original norm. This is again equivalent to the exact controllability of \((A^*,I)\), \(A\) being the generator of \((T_ t)\). Similar characterizations are obtained for strong and weak stability. E.g. (Theorem 5) \((T_ t)\) is strongly stable iff \((T_ t)\) is representable as the restriction of a shift semigroup to a invariant subspace.
