Typical surface design is carried out either by interpolating to a given set of data points, or by manipulating interactively \(B\)-spline or Bézier control nets. This paper takes a different approach, namely by making the desired surface the solution of a partial differential equation. The boundary conditions may be adjusted, and so a shape parameter effect is achieved. The method is applied to such examples as ship hulls, propeller blades, and telephone handsets.
