Let \(R\) be a field or a Dedekind domain with the field of quotients \(k\), and let \(\Lambda\) and \(A\) be finite-dimensional \(R\)-algebras or \(R\)- orders, respectively, with an \(R\)-algebra map \(i: \Lambda\to A\). Denote by \(p(A,\Lambda)\) the category of finitely generated relatively projective left \(A\)-modules, that is, modules isomorphic to the induced modules \(A\otimes_ \Lambda X\) with \(X\) finitely generated left \(\Lambda\)-modules, and their direct summands. The authors prove the existence of almost split sequences in \(p(A,\Lambda)\) under some restrictions on \(A\) and \(\Lambda\). In order to prove this fact they generalize the \textit{M. Auslander S. O. Smalø} theorem on the existence of almost split sequences in subcategories [J. Algebra 69, 426-454 (1981; Zbl 0457.16017)]. As a consequence of the main result the authors obtain that the category of representations of a wide class of bocses has almost split sequences. In particular, this can be applied to the bocses occuring in the reduction of representations of finite-dimensional algebras to representations of bocses. A different treatment of the Auslander-Reiten theory for bocses is given by \textit{W. L. Burt} and \textit{M. C. R. Butler} [in ``Almost split sequences for bocses'', Representations of finite dimensional algebras, CMS Conf. Proc. 11, 89- 121 (1991)].
