The paper is concerned with path integral quantization of canonical field theories. As the Lagrangian is allowed to be singular, constraints have to be taken into account. The main topic of the paper is the relation between global canonical symmetries and conservation laws. A nonlinear sigma model with Hopf and Chern-Simons term is examined for the sake of illustration.
