The authors give a new proof of the existence of a non-singular model for a variety in characteristic zero. More precisely they prove the following theorem: Let \(X\) be a normal projective variety and let \(D\) be a proper subvariety of \(X\). Then there exist a smooth projective variety \(M\), a strict normal crossing divisor \(R\subset M\) and a birational morphism \(f:M \to X\) with \(f^{-1} D=R\). The proof uses induction on \(n= \dim X\) and it is based on the construction of a finite morphism \(g: (X',D') \to(P,S)\) from a suitable blow up \((X',D')\) of \((X,D)\) to a pair \((P,S)\), where \(P= \mathbb{P} ({\mathcal O}\oplus {\mathcal L})\) for some line bundle \({\mathcal L}\) over \(\mathbb{P}^{n-1}\) and \(S\) is the image of a section of \({\mathcal L}\) and \(g\) is branched over a sum of sections.
