Sylow subgroups of finitary linear groups (Q1815255)

The author describes the Sylow \(p\)-subgroups of the full finitary general linear group \(\text{FGL}(V)\) of a vector space \(V\) (over a commutative field) and for any odd prime \(p\). Already in the finite-dimensional case the Sylow 2-subgroups are more involved, although the author expresses the view that the same methods, but with more cases to consider, should also produce the `\(p=2\)' case. The author starts by describing the irreducible Sylow \(p\)-subgroups and then moves onto the completely reducible Sylow-\(p\)-subgroups. These two cases run very much along the lines of the linear case. Finally he deals with the general case, where considerably new ideas and complications are involved.
