Let \((V^{n+1},g)\) be a \((n+1)\)-dimensional globally hyperbolic manifold of the form \(V^{n+1}=S\times\mathbb{R}\), such that the hypersurfaces \(S\times \{t\}\) are spacelike and the (non zero) vectors tangent to \(\{x\}\times\mathbb{R}\) are timelike. The author considers Cauchy problems with initial data on \(S\times\{0\}\) for quasilinear quasidiagonal systems of the form \(\square_g u^I+f^I(u^L, \nabla u^L,x) =0\), \(1\leq I\), \(L\leq N\), where \(\square_g\) is the wave operator on \((V^{n+1},g)\). Under suitable assumptions on \(g\), the author obtains local existence results. Global existence results are also obtained for solutions of the following equations: (1) \(\square_g u+au+ bu^p=0\), \(a,b\geq 0\), \(p\) an odd integer; (2) Higgs systems; and also for harmonic mappings from \((V^2,g)\) to a suitable properly Riemannian manifold. In particular earlier results of Cagnac and Choquet-Bruhat, Choquet-Bruhat, Eardley and Moncrief are thereby generalized.
