This is a long but pleasant introduction to a series of papers devoted to computations with \(K\)-theoretic flavour in Chevalley groups over a commutative ring. The authors make a good effort to explain their point of view and compare it with earlier work. There are many references. The text reads like the beginning of a monograph. The emphasis is on methods rather than on new results, even though the series will contain some of those too.
