The well-known Baer-Kaplansky theorem states that two torsion abelian groups \(G\) and \(G'\) are isomorphic if their endomorphism rings \(E(G)\) and \(E(G')\) are isomorphic. \textit{W. May} extended this theorem, in a series of papers, to various classes of groups including certain \(p\)-local mixed abelian groups [see, f.e., Contemp. Math. 171, 277-285 (1994; Zbl 0829.20078)]. In this paper, the authors attempt to extend the Baer-Kaplansky theorem to a special class \(\mathcal C\) of global mixed abelian groups. Each \(G\in{\mathcal C}\) is a reduced mixed abelian group which is divisible modulo its torsion part \(T\), is self-small and has finite torsion-free rank. Let \(V=G/T\) and \(A\) denote the algebra of all the endomorphisms of the \(Q\)-vector space \(V\) induced by the endomorphisms of \(G\). The group \(G\) is said to be \(A_0\)-cyclic if there is a commutative subalgebra \(A_0\) of \(A\) such that \(V=A_0v\) for some \(v\in V\). The authors prove the Baer-Kaplansky type theorems for various subclasses of \(A_0\)-cyclic groups belonging to \(\mathcal C\). A typical result is: Suppose \(G\in{\mathcal C}\) is \(A_0\)-cyclic and there is an infinite set \(S\) of primes such that each \(g\in G\) of infinite order has zero \(p\)-height for almost all \(p\in S\). If \(E(G)\cong E(G')\) where \(G'\) is any mixed abelian group with the same torsion-free rank as \(G\), then \(G\cong G'\). This paper may be deemed as the first successful attempt to extend the Baer-Kaplansky type theorems to reduced global mixed abelian groups of torsion-free rank greater than one.
