This is the third part of a series of papers by the author [I: Proc. R. Soc. Edinb., Sect. A 121, No. 3/4, 279-301 (1992; Zbl 0766.34059), II: J. Differ. Equations 114, No. 1, 272-287 (1994; Zbl 0817.34050)] dealing with a two-point differential operator \(L\) in \(L^2(0,1)\) defined by the expression \(-{d^2\over dt^2}+q\) \((q\in C[0,1])\) and mixed linearly independent boundary conditions \(B_1(u)=0\), \(B_2(u)=0\) at the end-points 0, 1. Using results from earlier papers, the author analyses the eigenvalues of \(L\), computes their algebraic multiplicities and ascents, and determines asymptotic formulae.
