Let \(f(z)\) be a polynomial with complex coefficients. The author considers the interesting question of whether one can determine \(f\) from the set of values \(E_f = \{|fg|\}\) where \(|\cdot |\) is a norm on the space of polynomials and \(g\) varies over all polynomials. He shows that the answer is no if the norm is the \(L^2\)-norm on the unit circle: in this case one can determine \(|f(z)|\) for all \(|z|= 1\) but this does not uniquely determine the polynomial \(f\). However, if one takes the norm to be the Bombieri norm \([\cdot]\), a certain weighted \(\ell^2\)-norm on polynomials of degree at most \(n\), then it is possible to determine \(f\).
