\textit{J.-L. Waldspurger}'s recent coherence result [Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Etud. Sci. 81, 25-72 (1995; Zbl 0841.22009)] for the germ expansion of the orbital integral of the unit element in the Hecke algebra on the topologically unipotent set, and Kazhdan's decomposition of compact elements into topologically unipotent and absolutely semi-simple elements [\textit{D. Kazhdan}, Lect. Notes Math. 1041, 209-249 (1984; Zbl 0538.20014)] are used to show Langlands' fundamental lemma for the symmetric square lifting from \(\text{SL} (2)\) to \(\text{PGL} (3)\) and the unit element of the Hecke algebra [\textit{Y. Flicker}, Math. Ann. 279, 173-191 (1987; Zbl 0608.22008). For extensions and applications see [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 330, 125-152 (1992; Zbl 0761.11027), and J. Funct. Anal. 122, 255-278 (1994; Zbl 0815.11030)]. Thus Kazhdan's and Waldspurger's theories are used to give a simple proof that the stable twisted orbital integral of the unit element of the Hecke algebra of \(\text{PGL} (3)\) is suitably related to the stable orbital integral of the unit element of the Hecke algebra of \(\text{SL} (2)\), while the unstable twisted orbital integral of the unit element of \(\text{PGL} (3)\) is matched with the orbital integral of the unit element on \(\text{PGL} (2)\). An Appendix examines the implications of Waldspurger's fundamental lemma in the case of endolifting [\textit{J.-L. Waldspurger}, Can. J. Math. 43, 852-896 (1991; Zbl 0760.22026)] to the theory of endolifting [\textit{D. Kazhdan} (loc. cit.), and the author, Compos. Math. 67, 271-300 (1988; Zbl 0661.22010)] and that of the metaplectic correspondence [\textit{Y. Flicker} and \textit{D. Kazhdan}, Publ. Math., Inst. Haut. Etud. Sci. 64, 53-110 (1986; Zbl 0616.10024)] for \(\text{GL} (n)\).
