The author proves that, for certain smooth closed three-dimensional manifolds \(\Sigma\), the topological manifold \(\Sigma\times\mathbb{R}\) possesses uncountably many smooth sructures. In particular, this holds if \(\Sigma\) is a rational homology sphere, or a Seifert manifold, or an almost flat manifold in Gromov's sense.
