A collection \(T_i \subseteq {\mathbb R}^d\), \(i=1, \ldots, M\), together with an expanding \(d\times d\) matrix \(A\), and a collection of sets \(\Gamma_{ij} \subseteq {\mathbb Z}^d\), \(i,j=1, \ldots, M\), is called \textit{self-affine} if \[ AT_i = \bigcup_{j=1}^M (\Gamma_{ij}+T_j), \;\;(i=1, \ldots, M) \] (the sets in the union above are assumed to overlap at measure zero at most). If the set \(\bigcup_{j=1}^M T_j\) tiles space when translated at a lattice \(\Lambda\) the collection is said to be a \textit{self-affine \(\Lambda\)-tiling set}. For a given matrix \(A\) and set system \(\Gamma_{ij}\), \(i,j=1, \ldots, M\), the authors prove the existence of several sets that are self affine with these parameters and describe conditions for such a set to be a lattice tile with a given lattice. Then they prove a one-to-one correspondence between multiresolution analyses with basis elements that are indicator functions of sets and self-affine tiling sets as defined above. They provide many interesting examples.
