The main difficulty in dealing with the mixed finite element method for standard three-field variational formulation lies in two compatibility conditions between the three finite element spaces. Under a special hypothesis the authors present a modified mixed formulation so that the verification of the two conditions is avoided; one has to deal with only one, and the problem has exactly the same solution as the old one.
